Our fabulous newly opened Rotterdam Markthal (by local renown architects MVRDV) is bold, unique, delicious and bear the Sistine Chapel ceiling of your weekly fruit and vege box.  If you have not visit it in person, go now!  Stall variety is largely occupied by artisan traders which is a rare sight in Rotterdam.  But embrace the best of the best  under the literally giant roof without the need of biking around town!

Oliva on Witte de Withstraat has a cozy interior, fantastic atmosphere and very good surprise chef menu.  They also offer a whole range of wine and cocktails.  If you are lucky, you might get that one and only nice waiter giving you that helping hand.  Otherwise be prepared for an under average service as Oliva has a reputation of neglected and at times rude assistance.  Oliva is also the sister restaurant of Gusto Trattoria just a block away.

Gare du Nord

Located in district Noord sits a DDR era train wagon called Gare du Nord.  This fully organic and vegan restaurant is owned by the same entrepreneur behind the cooking school Kook met mij met.  Lunch and dinner are served at a fair price and the best bargain is its unique concept.  Do support them!

LUX.  Luxury Italian dining but doesn’t cause your bank account.  Indoor seating is warm and classy or go for their back terrace which opens up the eating horizon with the ample space behind the whole block.  Anti-pasti comes dim-sum style for your picking or choose a 4 course dinner to fill yourself up.  Good food; relaxing background and worth a second trip.

Mevr Meijer

True to the concept.  Mevr Meijer is a French bistro in the middle of (once doggy) Noord.  Good food, atmosphere, gezellig and we love it!

soi 3

Soi 3 creates fantastic and wholesome Thai dishes.  The pad thai is fab and so is the simple but delicious beef noodles soup.  Two thumbs up for those crunchy and spicy salads too.  This is a Rotterdam’s gem!

Take our word, for best and most authentic sichuan dishes in Rotterdam, go to San San.

Recently refurbished and a specialised store with friendly and knowledgable staff, Treuren on Jonker Fransstraat is the place to go for game animals.  They also sell some poultry birds and a good wine selection at the side.

Kralingen’s jem – Vicini caters simple and honest Italian food.

A la Plancha

Pop-up seafood eatery A la Plancha that only opens on sunny days during the summer!

The newly renovated all vegetarian (and all organic) cafe Spirit at the Groene Passage.  Food comes buffet style but all carefully cooked and nothing is over-done or sloppily prepared.  Its casual dining but with fantastic nutritious  food made with love.  This place deserved two thumbs up.

Singeldingen on Heemraadsingel.  Non-profit snack kiosk that caters for kids and parents along Heemraadsingel playground.

Uit je Eigen Stad

Uit je Eigen Stad, the biggest urban farm in Europe!  Their restaurant is also worth a try.

roof top

Dakakkers is Rotterdam’s first public roof top garden. It stands above Het Schieblock off Weena covering about 1000sqm. Complete with a tea house, you can pop in every Friday to volunteer your handy skills or get some fresh veg or honey literally grown in the heart of your city.

De Vegetarische Slager

Close enough at Den Haag is De Vegetarische Slager (The Vegetarian Butcher).

The newly renovated Vermeyden Delicatessen, now with a chic lunchroom.  A true Rotterdam gem established since 1908!

Grocer and deli, Buiten on Nieuwe Binnenweg.

Oh hooray! Marqt grocer is now in Rotterdam.  One on Binnenrotte 77 (former Kookpunt shop) and one in Hillegersberg, Bergse Dorpsstraat 103.

Lokaal espresso cafe at the Mini Mall.

Bio Aan Huis

Enjoy your local farmers harvest, produce from the Hoeksche Waard and allow Bio aan huis to be at your service.  They now deliver to your door which makes weekly Bio box a must-have!  Shuala and Matthijs Tak are the friendly and hardworking owners – do support them!

de buytenhof

De Buytenhof is by far the best farm we know.  Only 10 mins by car from central Rotterdam and also reachable by metro.  This lovely farm keeps most domestic animals, herb garden, vegetables and fruits plot, a shop selling their produce and a popular and gezellig cafe.  Not forgetting a playground for the little ones (rain or shine).  While most active for public participation during the warmer season, Buytenhof is a great place to be during the weekend for the little ones to run around carefree.  We’ve picked apples, munched on fresh strawberries, held birthday parties and got muddy several times and still enjoyed each visit.  Their house apple juice is our pantry must and their honey is our breakfast favourite.  Best of all, the cafe hires disabled (but cheerful) servers which is something we surely support!

Rotterdamse Oogst

We love Rotterdamse Oogst for their simple mission which is to bring better tasty food to us ‘city people’.  This market gathers local farmers and their produce that cuts out the middle-man (supermarket) role.  We love and want to support local artisans rather than buying similar food flown in from other countries.  The markt is held every first Saturday at the Noordplein, a spring harvest festival with music and activities is held in May at Deliplein and fall harvest festival is held in September usually at Heemraadplein.

De Hoekschewaardse Telers

Tasty local potatoes De Hoekschewaardse Telers from this potato-land!

De Ondergrondse

Old school underground bakery – De Ondergrondse

De Groeneweg

De Groeneweg, the one and only organic butcher in Rotterdam.  A very good one too.

Said to be one of the only cafe that serves proper coffee before the Dutch realised the art.  Australian owned Urban Espresso Bar also makes a great, decent and enjoyable cup of chai latte! Don’t miss that awesome carrot cake!
